Why On-Grid Systems Shut Off During Outages

An on-grid (grid-tied) solar system is electrically synchronised with the APDCL grid — it feeds any surplus power it generates back into the grid through your net meter, and draws from the grid when your usage exceeds generation. When APDCL's supply goes down, the inverter is required by design and by electrical safety code to disconnect and stop generating immediately. This is called "anti-islanding" protection, and it exists for a very serious reason: if your system kept generating power onto a "dead" line during a grid outage, it could electrocute utility linemen working to restore power on what they believe is a de-energised line.
