Tin Roofs Are Common in Assam — and Very Installable
A large share of homes across Assam, especially in semi-urban and rural areas, use corrugated galvanised-iron (GI) or tin sheet roofing rather than RCC slabs. Solar panels can absolutely be installed on tin roofs, and in some ways installation is faster than on RCC — there's no concrete drilling required — but a few things need to be handled differently to avoid leaks and long-term structural issues.
Clamp Selection Matters More Than People Expect
The single biggest difference from RCC installation is how the mounting structure attaches to the roof. On tin roofs, we use purpose-made roof hooks or L-feet that clamp onto the raised ridges of the sheet, rather than piercing the flat sheet surface wherever convenient. Attaching directly through a flat section of tin — a common shortcut in low-quality installations — is exactly where leaks tend to start, since water finds its way in through the fastener hole over successive monsoons.
Waterproofing the Fastening Points
Wherever a bolt or hook does need to pass through the sheet (typically at the ridge, where hooks are fitted), the point should be sealed with a proper EPDM rubber washer or roofing-grade sealant — not ordinary silicone, which degrades faster under direct sun and heavy rain. This is a small detail that makes a real difference over a 25-year system life in Assam's monsoon climate, and it's worth explicitly asking your installer how they handle it before work begins.
Thermal Expansion and Sheet Movement
Tin sheets expand and contract more than RCC as temperatures shift between a cool monsoon morning and a hot, sun-exposed afternoon. Mounting structures on tin roofs need slightly more tolerance built into bolted connections to accommodate this movement without stressing the sheet or loosening fasteners over time — a rigid, over-tightened fixing on a tin roof is more likely to work loose (or crack the sheet) than the same fixing on concrete.
Structure Height and Airflow
On tin roofs, we typically mount panels on a slightly elevated structure rather than flush to the sheet. This does two things: it allows airflow underneath the panels, which keeps them cooler and improves generation efficiency (tin roofs already run hotter than RCC in direct sun, and panel output drops as panel temperature rises); and it keeps the panel edge clear of the sheet's raised ridges for a cleaner, more secure fit.
Cable Routing on Tin Roofs
DC cabling should be routed along the roof's structural purlins where possible, secured with UV-resistant cable clips, and kept clear of any point where rainwater channels down the sheet's corrugation. Cable entry points into the building (for the inverter connection) need the same careful sealing treatment as the mounting fasteners.
A Quick Pre-Installation Checklist for Tin Roof Homes
- Check the age and condition of the existing tin sheet — badly rusted or thinning sheets may need reinforcement or partial replacement before mounting a structure on them.
- Confirm the roof's structural purlins can bear the additional load of panels and mounting frame, especially for larger 5kW+ systems.
- Ask specifically what clamp type and waterproofing method the installer will use — this is the detail that separates a durable tin-roof installation from a leak-prone one.
- Plan for an elevated mounting structure rather than flush mounting, both for cooling and water drainage.

Is tin roof installation cheaper or more expensive than RCC?
Structure cost is broadly similar, though tin roofs can sometimes need slightly more elevated framing. Labour time is often a little faster since there's no concrete drilling involved.
Will solar panels make my tin roof hotter inside the house?
Generally the opposite — panels mounted with an air gap above a tin roof provide some shading benefit, which can slightly reduce heat transferred into the room below compared to bare tin exposed directly to the sun.
Can an old or rusted tin roof still support solar panels?
It depends on the extent of rust and remaining sheet thickness. In many cases replacing the sheet in the mounting zone, or upgrading the whole roof, is more cost-effective long-term than mounting on a compromised surface. A site visit can confirm what's needed.
